Rusted chains lie on the ground near the walkway to the Mizen Head Lighthouse.
Just saw Star Trek. In my head it was the best thing since sliced bread but it was still a great film. Loved the little nods to the original series. Definitely worth going to see!

24 May 2008 - The old boat at Mizen Head
Next time you’re out at Mizen Head you might notice this abandoned boat lying upside down by the visitor center. I almost missed it but I looked back to get a shot of the cliffs in the background. This makes a nice foreground I think.
Anyway, must have been an awful chore dragging that boat all the way up from the water. It was tiring enough pushing a buggy (and later carrying my bored baby) up from the bridge connecting the lighthouse to the mainland.
It’s a beautiful location. If you’re in West Cork be sure to visit!
10 March 2007 - Rusted, old and bent
This is part of another pillar near the one pictured yesterday but in much worse condition.
I love the textures and the way that rust practically flows down. It’s a shame I didn’t get everything in focus though.
I figured out why my posts started showing “This photo is currently unavailable”. On March 1st Flickr changed the way they name their images. Previously it was only a matter of changing _m.jpg to _o.jpg to get the original image, or swapping in “_s.jpg” to get a small thumbnail. Now the numbers in the filename change as well.
It’s a simple but tedious task to change the image before I publish a post but the thumbnails you see at the top of this page are generated by a small script which now needs to be rewritten and made a lot smarter.
25 October 2006 - Rusted and abandoned
An old oil drum stands on the quay at Ballycotton rusting away as the exposed metal is beaten down by the elements.
Technique: I increased the saturation of the reds to bring out the rust of the drum. I desaturated other colours so the drum would stand out.
I then duplicated the layer and darkened the top one to bring out the clouds and sky before using a layer mask to expose the ground on the bottom layer. After that a simple gradient at the top of the image provided a nice dark effect and finally, I dodge and burned the rust until I was happy. Was that useful?
I used CocoViewX to view my work directory from my Linux box on my Macbook. I was surprised that Finder didn’t display thumbnails and I didn’t want the iPhoto heavyweight when all I wanted was to know which image was which.
6 July 2006 - Chain Link
A huge link in a mostly submerged chain. If you looks carefully you’ll notice the trapped bottle of mineral water visible between the rusted metal!
This was shot only a few feet from the boats in the previous shot.
