I guess the number of high rise cranes we’ll see over our urban environment will decrease as the building industry collapses. Meanwhile there are plenty around. Here’s three I shot in the middle of Cork City from Emmett Place. At night they’re lit up which is when I shot short circuit.

Mallow Camera Club had the Photographer of the Year competition last night. I came 4th in the novice section, missing out on 3rd place by 1 point. So close!

PS. The photomeet in Dublin last weekend went very well by all accounts. There was much twittering yesterday from all concerned. Cranes over the construction site at the old Guy and Company site make for a striking image at night.

This was taken from the Tesco multi-storey car park, a few metres away from where I shot Clouds move at night.

Yesterday we had to bring the car for a service so I took the opportunity to travel to visit the framer in Kilbrittain and sign the border of the prints Haydn has made. The prints look great, they’re raised up from the background border and will eventually be framed in a deep frame. I hope to post photos of my visit in the next few days if I get the time to work on the photos.

The shipyards in Rushbrooke, just outside Cobh are still active although much quieter now than during their heyday. The cranes make for great photography against the moonlit sky.

This was shot from across the River Lee in Passage last November.

FRLinux asked about settings so here they are, including post-processing:

Flickr’s exif data for this is a bit wrong – gthumb says the exposure was for 5 seconds, aperture was wide open at f4.5, and lens set at 28mm, which you can probably multiply by 1.6 for the crop factor. ISO was 100.

Post Processing was done in the GIMP using 3 layers:
1. Top layer is transparent with a black gradient at the bottom. Layer mode is Overlay.
2. Middle layer is black and white, and blurred and with added noise. It’s set to screen mode, and opacity of 51%.
3. Bottom layer is the colour image, slightly saturated and darker.

Hope that helps!
