22 August 2009 - The Lone Guitar
A street entertainer plays his guitar on Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork last month during the WW photowalk on the 18th.
I have the winners of the hotel rooms for next month’s photowalk. I picked them with the help of Alexa, Laughing Lion and Andrea who picked the first distinct numbers between 1 and 5. Thanks also to Laura, Elliot (might need rounding up?), Ron and Dena who also responded.
And, the winners are (cue drum roll, etc):
1. Pa Dineen
2. Kevin
3. Rudy
I better get on to Damien or Pat and tell them. They’ll probably have to get in touch with the winners next week!
18 August 2009 - Growing Wild in the Biosphere
Inside Biosphere 2, Arizona is a complete ecosystem meant to keep a group of people alive for months on end. That project ended years ago but the building remains and it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area!
Just in case you didn’t see yesterday’s post, 3 hotel rooms going for free on the 25th of September if you’re going to the photowalk the following day! Just leave a comment if you can definitely go and want to be in with a chance to win.
I thought there might be a rush on this but, boy is it proving hard to give away such a good prize! I’ll just have to claim one of the rooms for myself!

24 July 2009 - The 8A Bus
A man gets on the 8A bus to Curraheen on Patrick Street, Cork last Saturday.
This was on the way to the photowalk, walking up the street with Chris to where Will had double parked because he was driving home again. Chris had dropped his camera in the car when he got out!
23 July 2009 - 100% Cork
A butchers shop in The English Market was all decorated in white and red flags last Saturday. Did Cork have a big game last weekend?
21 July 2009 - Out of the rain
A young lady steps out of the rain on Tuckey Street, Cork last Saturday. What you don’t see in this shot is the large group of photographers behind me, sheltering under the awning outside Tribes. A torrential rain shower had just passed and thankfully was the last we saw.
PS. Cork photowalkers! Upload your images to this group on Flickr! Or you can upload them to Pix.ie too. Make sure to tag them “cork”, “corkphotowalk”, “skphoto” and “worldwidephotowalk” for maximum exposure!
18 July 2009 - The Worldwide Photowalkers
41 had signed up but some couldn’t make it unfortunately. In the end, a more manageable 23 turned up. Here’s most of us as pictured afterwards in The Old Oak bar where we went for drinks and sandwiches.
I had a great time today, I think everyone else did too by their reactions. The day didn’t go quite as I had planned. We met at the GPO at 2pm, waited a few minutes for stragglers and then just because it started to rain we headed to The English Market.
Half an hour or so there and people were making comments about the number of cameras so we walked up Oliver Plunkett Street and found the Globalfest Festival in full swing in Bishop Lucey Park!
It was great to walk through the park, the rain kept off, a stage play provided plenty of shots, and other activities and people did too. Off through the side gate and just as we got on to Tuckey Street, the heavens opened and rain poured down. Luckily the awning in front of Tribes was down. Good cover for all of us!
As the rain let up we headed towards the Grand Parade again, on the way to The Clarion for the end of the Lee Swim. We stopped at Nano Nagle Bridge to shoot the local scenery and then at the Peace Park (they’ve done a great job on that, much more open and visible than it was), and then off down South Mall.
The Lee Swim had started at 3pm, it was 3:35pm now and my brother Donal rang to say the swimmers would be on the home stretch now. I walked a little faster.
We got to the Clarion to find the last few dozen swimmers hitting home. The final swimmer was visibly suffering, doing the backstroke slowly against the current. When he finally slapped the target a huge cheer and clapping erupted from the crowd. He was helped into a Zodiac for the final trip to the quayside. There’s no way I could do what they did. Amazing stuff.
Then it was off to The Old Oak. My wife and son arrived just as we did which was happy timing. We commandeered their back room and a few extra chairs. People got drinks, some of us had sandwiches, we all chatted, and the group photo was taken (by my wife Jacinta. Thank you!)
Thank you so much to Gary and the staff of the bar. Wish we could have stayed longer.
Great day, feet are very sore from the unaccustomed exercise, hope we can do it again this summer!
Edit – that was fast! Katie has started posting some photos from the walk already. Check them out on the corkphotowalk tag on Flickr. She’s uploaded the same ones on pix.ie under the same tag too. Worth keeping an eye on that tag!

There are still places left in the World Wide Photowalk here in Cork. If you’re around on July 18th, sign up and join us!
20 May 2009 - Worldwide Photo walk in CorkOn July 18th, photographers all over the world will be holding photowalks. There’s going to be events in Belfast, Dublin and Cork that day, and who knows. Might be a few more around the country by the time that day arrives!
I’ve just filled in a few details on the Cork Photowalk page on the Worldwide Photo Walk website. You can register on that page. While places are limited to 50, I’d be surprised if we get that many.
I think 2pm is a good time to start. It’ll give people a chance to grab a bite to eat, the city should be busy with shoppers and tourists, and the sun will have passed overhead, giving us some shade to play with. Is that too late? Too early? What about 10am in the morning? Town is nice and quiet in the morning but some people aren’t up that early at the weekend!
If you’re not in Cork on the 18th, there’s also a Dublin photowalk and a Belfast photowalk too. Dublin one is almost booked out though so hurry to register!
We’ve had other photowalks in Cork. Some of my photos from those events are tagged Cork Photowalk and iba09. Take a look. There’s plenty to photograph in Cork!
See you on July 18th?
