I wasn't in the mood to chat to strangers on Saturday and so this is the easiest way to make some interesting photos. I still haven't had business cards printed! Would you not be better placed being ballsy about it and just pointing your camera at people and taking the shot that you want. Print up some business cards indicating that you are a photographer, with links back to your website etc, so people can see what you're about if they are curious. Also, with digital, if people do feel uncomfortable with you shooting them, the beauty is that they can see you delete the image from your camera there and then, if they still insist on same after you have explained what it is that you do. The only scenario I can see you countering my point is that you are trying to catch candids, and by making it obvious that you are taking a photo people change their behaviour. Whilst this is true, I find that if you are either quick at getting your shot, or you don't react to people looking at you as you are looking through your viewfinder and stay focused on them, that they quickly think that it is not in fact them you are photographing, and quickly forget about you and get on with their business.
