Taken on: 2005-11-13 17:47:50

A beached whale on Garretstown Beach last November.
A notice which is being read by the man in the foreground reads that this is a female long finned pilot whale and asks that people do not remove or bury it as it is required by researchers.
I was reluctant to post this picture in the past 2 months but after what happened in London when a whale died it spurred me to find this photo again.

This was taken on the same night as this photo and this one.

Very impressive , indeed! It's really a pity that so powerful animal have lost its life!
Poor beast. I hope it didn't suffer too much.
such an image need to be seen by other flickr members

Sad but impressive

I often wonder if they do this out of desperation, to alert us that we're destroying their (and our) environment.
This one must have been fresh. I came across a rotting one on a rocky and deserted shoreline once and the smell was horrendous! 1-2-3
I've never seen a beached whale before. But I agree with eamon. This is sad. But impressive. Perfect!
wow, must be very upsetting to see. I notice none of the onlookers looks very animated. I think you were right to post and thank you. I went whale watching this summer and it was a breathtaking experience. I didn't imagine that they ever found their way onto beaches in Ireland with no way to return to safety.
Very strong scenery. Like a newpaper photo... You've captured this sad effent very matter-of-factly.

"I like it" may sound wrong regarding the poor dead whale but this photo is really a masterpiece of photo journalism.

Poor thing...
There was another one the other day too...
