North Cathedral, Cork

The Cathedral of St. Mary & St. Anne, or the North Cathedral as it’s known in Cork sits right in the middle of this photo. It’s the city’s Catholic cathedral. A large portion of the north side of Cork City surrounds it. Blackpool is immediately behind it, and you can see the Heineken Brewery on the right where Murphy’s Stout and soon Beamish will be brewed.

This shot was taken yesterday from the tower of St. Anne’s Church, or “Shandon Bells”. You can see the huge shadow it casts on the green park and nearby houses! I will post photos from the Irish Blog Awards tomorrow. I’ve hardly had time to sit down today.

Wow, lovely photo you have over there :) I like the wide angle. Looks like the tower of St Anne’s church has to be pretty tall for you to see so many things. There’s a St Anne’s church in my hometown and they have this carnival every year where people will hike the mountain behind it with candles in their hands.

This location needs to be on route in the next photowalk!
Enjoyed your and Jacinta’s company on saturday night, it was great. I stayed on until my laptop’s battery died.
    Take care

Nobody rang the bells when you were heading up the tower? Tch. The local hooligans are slacking.

Have they ever gotten the clocks on St. Anne Shandon fixed, or is it still the four-faced liar?

Katiec – definitely. It was my first time up there and were blessed with the weather. Great meeting you at the Awards too. What a night! What a blast!

DaveP – oh they did. I wore ear muffs and took a video in the bell room. My wife rang while I was filming so the video cut short but I *have* to post it somewhere. The bells are so loud it’s crazy to go up there without ear protection.

Not sure about the clock though, but do you remember the pendulum? Mesmerising to see it swinging ..

I wish now I went up with you’s. I’ll have to return to Cork city as I really enjoyed the photo walk.

I was too traumatised by fecking up my lens to climb up. And looking at this I will have to get back up there. I LOVE the shadow of the cathedral, brilliant. The weather was fantastic and it was great to finally meet you too. Good day will definitely have to get to Cork for another meet.

See http://www.flickr.com/photos/davepolaschek/2146344494/ from my trip for more – you can see two of the faces in that one, and if you look closely, they’re at least 2 or 3 minutes different.

    Yeah, the bells are loud.

And yes, I remember the pendulum. You are getting very sleepy….
