Midleton Princess

Adding a bit of humour ot the Midleton Food and Drink Festival, this princess was just on a break but kindly posed for the camera after I asked.
Sorry about the blown out detail on her hand – the sun was behind her so I had to fill in the shadows with flash. Unfortunately her hand was sunlit and the camera just couldn’t take it.

Such an amusing smile! I can’t help but be charmed by the two men with their infants. Very sweet.
I wouldn’t have noticed the blown-out hand until you pointed it out. You’ve captured a great moment with the two sets of smiles.
I really like your wide-angle street work. Most people (me included) don’t have the balls to go in close, but the results you get testify to the fact that fortune favours the brave!
My solution to the blown highlights on something like this (especially when using fill-flash) is to shoot 1 stop down. Maybe it’s just my Nikon’s metering system, but I find that I almost never lose shadow detail (at least not that I can’t get back when processing from NEF), and shooting a stop down means I blow fewer highlights.
An example of where that worked pretty well (I think) is http://www.flickr.com/photos/davepolaschek/204582968/ where I knew the fireworks were going to provide additional (hard to meter) light, so I metered a stop down, left the camera on aperture priority, and watched the speed as I shot (I probably should have been in full-manual, but wasn’t convince I’d have time to set everything up right). The fireworks had almost no effect on the metering, but changed the lighting conditions so that things came out the way I had hoped.
I really like this photo. The shadow cast from left to right is really nice, excellent “lines” for the eye.
Know of the two men were a couple or just two Dads out for a walk?
I agree with Gareth that you get great photos from just having the guts to ask. I’m developing a thicker skin but you gotta remember Gareth, that Donncha looks the part of a professional photographer with his camera. Asking people to pose for a non-DSLR camera like mine just doesn’t have the same impact!
Thanks guys, but when I’m walking the streets I rarely ask anyone if I can make a photo of them! Festivals are different because people, especially street performers, expect to be photographed! It’s good for business because the photographer could be from a local paper!

She recognised one of the group as the Midleton Princess I photographed last week and after speaking to her, they persuaded her to ride in their sedan car. She was embarrassed at first but what fun is life if you can’t do crazy things every now and again eh? We were in town enjoying the festivities of the Ceili Mor and the Cork Folk Festival. I love Ireland, but without Irish it woudnt be the same! I just wondered if any of you would care about a French 18boy, just chat with me.. I met people there last April when I came with school and made relationship (almost with youngs [the park and the school near Jameson Distillery]) but I need to find them back!!!
