Culhane

Mannix and Culhane on Washington Street occupies a low single storey building on the corner with North Main Street. Did they lose the top floors of their building a few years ago? I remember a girl was killed just up the road when falling masonry from a neighbouring building fell on her.
I have a vague recollection that this building was found to be similarly weak but maybe I’m making it all up in my head.

    You’re spot on Donncha,

    The accident that killed the girl happened on the corner opposite, the corner with North Main street. It was during some particularly bad weather. IIRC she was waiting to use a pay phone that was there.

    I was living in the city at that time so I think it was 1998 or 1999 when it happened.

    It was new years eve 1999 (or the 30th Dec 1999). It was the parapet to the building on Washington street that housed the solicitor’s offices of Colm Burke. Following that a whole load of buildings had emergency work carried out to them – The Mannix and Culhane building got a haircut and the top 2 (or 3) floors were taken off. Also, the derelict site beside it on south main street was demolished along with the Liberty Bar opposite. This cull of buildings continued through 2000 & 2001 when the ‘Main Drainage’ was in town. I worked on that and we regularly did structural surveys of buildings and took down dangerous chimney pots and so on (look up at the chimney pots between Meadows and Byrne and the Slot Machine Arcade on Academy Street for an example.) Since then the effort seems to have died off in lieu of making sure new apartments had extractor fans to their toilets and other such building regulation issues. I have no doubt that we will see a spate of mini-demolitions in the next couple of months.

    Wow, it was that long ago? I remember it was around New Year’s but thought it might have been 2000, not the year before. Time flies.

    I did a quick search trying to find a news article about it but unfortunately it didn’t show up.
    I’ve found that in the past too. I searched for a local news item about 6 months after the incident a few years ago and found what I wanted but when I went back to look for it last year it was nowhere to be found. I found the Examiner front page for 2000-01-01 and the first headline is “Street closed after wall collapse”. Unfortunately the link it goes to is bust. :(

    Found it on the RTE website: Investigation into the collapse of Cork building

    An investigation has begun in Cork into the cause of the partial collapse of a building in the city centre, yesterday evening. A young woman died and eight other people were injured in the incident, which happened in Washington Street shortly before five o’clock. The woman who died has been named as 21-year-old Aoife Bell from Kerry Pike, Cork.
