A few weeks ago Saor Patrol played in Cork on Patrick’s Street, in front of an appreciative audience who clapped and cheered to the drums and beat of this lively Scottish band.
Unfortunately they were there to publicize an event, “Mental Health Awareness Event” organised by the Church of Scientology, or at least a front organisation for them, CCHR. The event took place in Cork City Hall that weekend. This gent was handing out leaflets and booklets to the crowd and despite all the cheering and clapping and general good humour, he never once smiled. He wore the same dead, dour look the whole time. I asked him if I could take his picture and this is the smile he gave me. Maybe he needs to go see a psychiatrist, or take his vitamins.

Guysal Ltd must had an office on Cornmarket Street some time ago as the phone numbers above aren’t valid Cork numbers any more. Both should have a “4″ prefix now. This wall was exposed during the extensive construction work on the old Guy and Company building on that street.
Guysal Ltd are now in Ovens, Co. Cork.

High Street in Bantry, Co. Cork is one of the main streets in the town. It was a gorgeous day when I walked around there and shot this high contrast photo on one of it’s corners.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t know where Cock Pit Lane was, or if you had never heard of it. It’s a small lane off Cornmarket Street, Cork.
I was fascinated by the slight change in meaning of the English and Irish names. The Irish name, “Lana Troid Coileach” literally means, “Cock Fight Lane”, a much less politically correct interpretation I’m sure you’ll agree. I don’t think the name changed in recent times because the only hit for this lane in Google is a PDF file listing O’Shea family members. Apparently William Shea, a publican, lived on Cock-Pit Lane in 1795. Pity there isn’t any more information.

Traffic must go left. This is one of those shots that has sat in TODO folder for ages and ages because I liked it, but it was sorely in need of some work. I probably cheated by making it black and white.

Penn Stivien is 671km from this town in Kerry. I can’t remember the name of the place now, but they have a bar/restaurant there that serves fabulous food. I don’t remember the name of that either.

Electricity everywhere and so evident at night in street lighting. I took this shot after meeting Mark for coffee 2 weeks ago. It’s this building site right in the middle of Cork City. More conventional shots will follow over the next few days.

A replica poster in Cobh Heritage Center advertises Cheap Sunday Excursions to Youghal on Sundays from 4th June 1933. Great Southern Railways are long gone now.
The Heritage Center is a nice place to stop and grab a bite to eat. Can’t remember prices but there’s plenty of room for a buggy so I was more than happy.
Plenty of “ye aulde” stuff to photograph too!

I’m hoping to organise a photowalk in Doneraile Park next month. Any weekends in particular suit? The Park is a lovely scenic area. It may be busy in the summer but if you don’t like shooting scenery and nature this photowalk probably won’t be for you.
