Tir na nOg is the house on the right of this photo. It’s a house that Colaiste Ciaran, an Irish summer school on the island, rents during the summer and where I spent a number of weeks years and years ago. The long, low building attached to the left is a canteen.

An Oige have a large hostel further down, near the stony beach. I remember looking with curiosity and longing at the kayaks in a nearby shed. Us students never got anything quite as exciting as those!

The lighthouse at Mizen Head in West Cork is a fairly big tourist attraction in the area, and no wonder. From the visitor center you descend by a sloping path to a narrow bridge between two high cliffs with the sea lashing underneath. The lighthouse itself is nestled at the end of the headland, clinging to the rocks. The people who built it must have awfully brave souls.

This is part of the path and the lighthouse buildings are in the background. It’s well guarded by a bright red railing so there’s little risk of falling off a cliff unless you really have a death wish. Lovely area. Definitely going there again!

I photographed the beach at Couminole on the Dingle Peninsula back in 2006 when there was a beach there. There was no sand to be seen during repeated visits there in September 2007.

I had actually quite forgotten I had taken this so it was nice to see the lovely sandy beach!

Trivia – a well known member of Mallow Camera Club who shall remain nameless was caught by the tide and had to remain sitting on the rocks for several hours in wet, foggy and rough conditions until the tide went out again.
