Girls Talking

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006 by Donncha

seated on the side of the pavement and on the deep in at the Ceili Mor in a few weeks ago. Despite the noise of dancing, an announcer and playing I think a meaningful discussion was had!

Looks like I’ve made it. One of my photos was used on the snopes.com messageboard without linking back to me or crediting me. I shouldn’t be surprised I suppose, but I am a little angry at the original poster. Thankfully someone linked to it further down in the . Thanks Kathy B.

Snopes.com have now published the picture and the joke description on a separate page linking to this blog. Thank you!

Read what Chris Weeks writes about copyright. I wonder what he has in mind. On a related note, the Orphan Works Bill is dead! This law in the US would have meant that “images on the web in particular as fair game for unauthorised (and thus unpaid) use, as it requires only rather nominal checks to be made to establish the owndership of copyright before material can be freely used.” I like the way Peter Marshall solved unauthorised commercial usage of his images. He sent an invoice and a polite letter to the offending company!

Pleased to meet you!

Friday, September 22nd, 2006 by Donncha

A child greets one of the onlookers at the Cork Folk Festival after the “Christ Restoration Ministries Gospel Choir” have sung and danced. There were lots of kids about and they were all having a great time!

I love this photo because the look so , kids are drinking their water and watching, the expressions on ’s faces as they see this small child come up to an adult, and of course the expressions of those who are oblivious to what’s going on. So much happening in one scene.

Balloon Boy

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006 by Donncha

A boy is dragged by his mother up St. Patrick’s at the Mor. He was playing with a balloon by punching it continually. I saw him approach and as luck would have it, err, I mean, I quickly composed this shot. I love the expression on his face and I’m very that I caught this moment!

The road to Ceili

Sunday, September 17th, 2006 by Donncha

stroll along the closed off St. Patrick’s to the Mor.

Technique: I had to rotate the photo and crop it a small bit to get a straighter horizon, then some dodge/burn to bring out the contrast, and fired off the GIMP lomo plugin that creates two layers - one to highlight the centre, and the other to provide the vignette. I added a layer mask to the vignette and by using a gradient knocked off the top half of the vignette.

Looking out for the kids

Friday, September 15th, 2006 by Donncha

A wary father carries his son on his shoulder at the Mor as his photo is taken on St. Patrick’s last weekend. Looks like his passenger is enjoying the festival!

I like this: State of Emergency - pictures from Vogue of models and Police. They’re scanned from Vogue Italia so buy the magazine if you see it and enjoy this photo essay.

Thursday, September 14th, 2006 by Donncha

Me? I was taking ! If I didn’t have my camera I’d have been out there like a shot, yes sir, definitely, no doubt about it at all…

Pure joy! A child on drums!

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006 by Donncha

Can you imagine the noise? Well, don’t worry, it was in the middle of the ! A child took control of the drums while the adults took a break during the Cork Folk Festival.
From the programme I guess the singing and dancing with accompanied drums and were the “Christ Restoration Ministries Gospel Choir”. A large gathered around so it was difficult to get any shots of the dancing, not surprising really because they were very good.

I like this: Battersea Power Station and Grosvenor Bridge because the photographer, Dave Gorman, had a positive experience with the police. (via)

All the fun of the Ceili Mor

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006 by Donncha

The Mor on St. Patrick’s , , last weekend. Last year the Mor attracted 8,371 who broke the world record for the largest Irish dancing event!
This year was a more modest event but still the showed up and joined in, slowly at first, but there was a decent out enjoying themselves later!
from last year: part 1 and part 2.

I forgot to mention. I saw so many with cameras that I’m surprised there aren’t a lot more -based photoblogs. I’m not about with a compact camera and kids in tow, I counted at least 5 solitary silently working the and the dancers with everything from bridge cameras to Digital SLRs and zoom lenses. I really need to get business cards printed and spread the word about WordPress.com

Princess Jacinta

Monday, September 11th, 2006 by Donncha
Royal Sedan Crew Portrait

Princess Jacinta was formally announced to the populace of as she rode a sedan car up Saint Patrick’s in . She was regal in stature, enjoying every moment of it, and alighted outside Boots Chemist on the thoroughfare where she was presented with a flower as a token of gratitude from a populace. She ended her reign shortly afterwards and is at home with me now. The experience hasn’t changed her at all.
“Your highness, is that ok?”

Members of Cork Circus took my wife Jacinta up the main in City. She recognised one of the as the Midleton Princess I photographed last week and after speaking to her, they persuaded her to ride in their sedan car. She was embarrassed at first but what fun is life if you can’t do crazy things every now and again eh?
We were in town enjoying the festivities of the Mor and the Cork Folk Festival.
