Two show off their moves in Fitzgerald’s Park accompanied by played on the berimbau and atabaque. The fighting is very exciting to watch as participants leap from the ground, and seem to defy gravity on occasion!

From the Wikipedia page on Capoeira:

is a Brazilian fight-dance, game, and martial art created by enslaved Africans during the 19th Century Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the centre of the circle.

  1. so thats how you spell Capoeira, Ive never known and often wondered. :) Good action in these photos!

  2. One of my previous girlfriends was into Capoeira and it really is amazing to watch. Everything is so fluid and perfectly timed.

I always wanted to take a proper set of lights to one of the lessons and capture some shots :)

  6. @Donncha

Thanks for the tip and the great photo, it is just a prototype site that I am putting together for my instructor in the Candeias Group, and your photo does such a good job of capturing the action of Capoeira that I had to use it.

  7. I’m always intrigued by composite photos such as this (is that even the right term?), never quite sure how to pick the rights shots for it. But this is an excellent example of complementary photos. They really work together well.

Glad I found your photo site again, I must have lost the link in the great feed purge of ‘06!

  8. Great Shot Donn!

    Found in a search. (?)
